Barefoot DarlingShe danced on the tips of her toes. She was once a barefoot darling.Barefoot Darling
She stepped lightly on the soft rounded stones of the beach,
Curling her toes in the sun warmed sand.
Each step like a gazelle’s –
Leg extended: long, and precise.
Foot arched: Tentative but sure.
Then her beach fell away, Washed away with time and solitude.
No sand to cover and protect the rough underside. No sand for her soft feet.
Each step like a cripple’s –
Leg close: scared and wounded Foot flat: sadly anticipating the edge.
